Glossary

Access card

A card used with a set-top box to provide access to digital satellite pay TV.

Analogue transmission/analogue signal

A type of signal transmission, whereby the initial signal (e.g. voice) is transformed into an electric signal and broadcast as such. The transmission is carried out by a continuous change of the frequency, amplitude or phase of the broadcast signal. Analogue data transfer usually requires more bandwidth than digital broadcast and is more susceptible to insertion loss.

APS (Authorised Point-of-Sale)

Cyfrowy Polsat’s retail points of sale for digital satellite pay TV, Cyfrowy Polsat’s Internet access, and the Plus network’s mobile telephony services. APSs are where customers can sign up for Cyfrowy Polsat’s services and take advantage of special offers for Cyfrowy Polsat’s television and Internet access, as well as Plus mobile telephony services. They may also purchase a set-top box and order a professional antenna installation. The APSs also provide technical advice, accept Cyfrowy Polsat’s equipment for servicing, and supply replacement units for the duration of repairs.

ARPU (Average Revenue Per User)

The average monthly net revenue per subscriber to our services, calculated as the quotient of the total net revenue generated by subscribers to our pay TV services in a given period and the average number of subscribers to whom we provided services in a given period.

Audience share

The group of TV viewers watching a channel at a given time, expressed as the percentage of all TV viewers at the time.

Broadband Internet access

Broadband or high bandwidth connection to the Internet network.

BTS (Base Transceiver Station)/tower

A transceiver station whose antennas transmit and receive radio signals and which communicates with terminal devices (mobile phones, modems) in its operating area.

Catch-up TV

A service providing access to selected programming content for a certain period after it was broadcast on TV.

Churn rate

The churn rate is calculated as the ratio of agreements terminated in a 12-month period to the average annualised number of agreements executed in the same period. The number of terminated agreements is reduced by the number of subscribers who entered into another agreement with us no later than by the end of the 12-month period and the number of subscribers who had more than one agreement and terminated one of them to subscribe for the Multiroom HD service.

CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

A set of systems, tools and procedures necessary for customer relationship management. CRM involves not only IT systems and customer relationship management mechanisms, but also the entire business strategy and philosophy, which help build positive, long-term relations with customers.

DTH (Direct-To-Home)

A service providing access to television and radio channels broadcast by satellite as part of paid programming packages.

Dividend

Part of Company’s profit distributed to the shareholders.

DVB-T or DTT (Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial/Digital Terrestrial Television)

Digital technology designed to enable broadcasting of more channels and/or ensure better quality image and audio using radio transmission received by an antenna.

EBITDA

Operating profit before depreciation, amortisation and impairment losses.

FTA (Free-To-Air)

Unencrypted, generally available TV and radio channels.

HDTV

High-definition television (at least 1280×720 pixels). Television signal format of a definition higher than the standard.

HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Plus)

A technology of radio data transfer at higher speeds – up to 21 Mbps, 28.8 Mbps for MIMO and 42 Mbps for Dual Carrier.

ICSC (Internet Customer Service Centre)

An Internet site allowing customers, upon logging in, to manage their subscriber accounts.

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television)

Technology enabling transfer of television signal over IP broadband network.

LTE (Long Term Evolution)

Wireless data transmission technology, characterised by much higher transfer speeds, larger network capacity, and lower latencies than traditional technologies. At present, it is the world’s fastest and most advanced mobile Internet.

MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output)

A technology solution increasing wireless network capacity, based on ‘multiple input multiple output’ data transmission both on the broadcast and reception end.

Modem (Modulator – Demodulator)

Piece of equipment enabling Internet access. It processes digital data into analogue data to send it to another modem over a conventional telephone line. A modem also performs analogue-to-digital signal conversion, to send the converted signals to a computer. Two types of modems are manufactured − internal and external. Modems vary mainly by their transmission speeds.

Multiroom HD

Service providing access to the same range of TV channels on up to four television sets in one household for a single subscription fee.

Multiplex

A combined stream of digital data, composed of two or more streams of data carrying TV and radio programming, along with additional information, in particular concerning the conditional access system or additional services. It is a package of TV and radio channels and additional services, simultaneously transmitted digitally to the user over a single frequency channel.

Multiplexer system

A set of devices which make it possible to merge several TV channel signals along with additional data into a single data stream. A statistical multiplexer will dynamically allocate portions of the frequency band to the respective channels on an as-needed basis.

MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator)

(Mobile Virtual Network Operator) A reseller of mobile telephony services. Operators MVNOs are not holders of licences for using radio frequencies or radio network owners, but they operate their own telecommunications infrastructure in the Full MVNO model. Like resellers of mobile telephony services, they sell services under their own brand and, depending on the model adopted, they may have their own range of telephone numbers, an individual network code, their own SIM cards, and a billing system, and are free to define their own offer of services.

ODU-IDU

Home Internet unit, comprising an ODU modem installed outside a building, and connected to an IDU home router. The unit significantly increases LTE reception inside buildings.

Operator

A telecommunications provider entitled to render telecommunications services.

Pay-per-view (PPV)

A service of paid access to selected TV content, frequently live sports broadcasts.

Prime time

The time when TV or radio stations have the largest audience and hence advertising income – prime time is when best programming content is broadcast.

Pre-paid

Sale of a given operator’s services on a prepayment basis

Post-paid

A system of purchasing services on a subscription basis, in which services are paid for after being used.

Programme licence

The right to use (distribute) TV or radio channels in a precisely defined manner.

Router

An electronic network device acting as a communication node between separate computer networks. It enables Internet connection for an additional computer or computers.

Satellite centre

Cyfrowy Polsat’s receiving and transmitting centre located at the Company’s registered office in Warsaw, at ul. Łubinowa 4a.

SD TV

Standard definition television, the digital equivalent of the analogue PAL and NTSC standards.

Set-top box

A device processing the encoded digital signal so that it may be received by a TV set. It is generally used to receive digital satellite pay TV.

smartDOM

A programme operated by Cyfrowy Polsat and Plus mobile network operator, combining such products as TV, Internet, phone, electricity and banking services, and offering savings for each additional service purchased from the combined portfolio of both operators and their partners.

Share in advertising market

Share of TV advertisement and sponsorship revenue of a given entity in the total revenue from TV advertising in Poland.

SMS (Short Message Service)

A short text message which can be sent to another mobile telephony user directly from the phone or via the Internet, from a website. Text messages can contain up to 160 characters.

Subscriber

A person who has concluded an agreement with us for the provision of digital pay TV services, obliged to pay fees for access to a package or packages of television and radio channels, or who uses such Pay TV service packages upon prior payment of a monthly fee, without concluding an agreement.

Subscription warrants

Securities issued by a joint stock company. Warrants may be in a registered or bearer form. Holders of warrants have the right to take up or subscribe for new issue shares.

Technical reach (Broadcast Coverage Area)

Percentage of households in Poland capable of receiving the broadcast of a given channel.

Transponder

A separate part of a telecommunications satellite responsible for sending TV and radio channels from the operator’s receiver and transmitter centre to subscribers’ set-top boxes, through satellite dishes.

TTS (Text-To-Speech)

A service enabling automatic voice playback of prepared texts.

TV router

A device connecting any given source of digital TV signals with any given reception point. The television centre makes thousands of such connections. The bandwidth of each channel for an HD signal is 1.5 Gbps, but will reach 3 Gbps in the near future.

VOD (video on demand)

A service which allows viewers to access selected TV programmes and content at any time.
